Verifying line types before you commit a route: mobile vs VoIP vs landline
Most carriers and wholesalers have seen this: a destination that technically answers calls, but the traffic behaves completely differently depending on whether the terminating numbers are mobile, VoIP, or landline. Committing a route without knowing the line-type mix can quietly change completion rates, answer ratios, cost, and even SMS/OTT eligibility for the same destination.
What actually matters before committing:
- Mobile vs landline vs VoIP classification (fixed/mobile termination rates differ, and some routes are priced per line type)
- Number portability - a number can look mobile but have been ported to a VoIP carrier, or vice versa
- Carrier identity - which operator actually holds the number today, not which operator originally owned the block
This is why bulk pre-checks on number lists matter before you route: a 2% line-type misclassification can flip your margin assumptions on high-volume destinations.
We built PhoneVeriflo to run these carrier and line-type checks in bulk or via API with a free preflight (phoneveriflo.com) - practical when you are deciding between two routes for the same destination. Curious what others do today: do you verify line types before signing a route, or rely on the provider's declared stats?
